Consumer and Regulatory Law

This expanding area of law covers topics such as consumer credit, trade descriptions, misleading prices, food safety, weights and measures, consumer contracts, product liability and safety, licensing (particularly consumer credit licensing), timeshare, package travel, shops and advertising.

Gough Square Chambers is ranked number one in this field by both Chambers and Partners Directory of the Legal Profession and The Legal 500.

We are instructed both by firms of solicitors and in-house legal departments. We act for banks and other financial institutions, supermarkets, those involved in the food and drink industry and for numerous manufacturers, distributors and high street retailers. We also act for local authorities' Trading Standards and Environmental Health Departments and for government agencies such as the Office of Fair Trading.

Advice and representation is provided in civil proceedings, especially in relation to contracts governed by the Consumer Credit Act 1974, and in criminal proceedings, both prosecuting and defending, across the full range of criminal courts, from the magistrates’ court to the House of Lords.

We provide advice and representation on licensing and other issues before regulatory bodies such as the OFT and DTI.

We advise on non-contentious matters such as draft contracts, policy documents, procedure manuals and advertisements. Reviews of contract documentation are provided for securitisation and acquisition purposes.

See our free quarterly "Trading Law Bulletin" for recent developments in this field.

We are accredited by the Law Society and the Bar Council to lecture in this area (CPD points are awarded) and in-house lectures can be provided on request.
