Jonathan Goulding

Jon read law at Manchester University and was called to the Bar (Inner Temple) in 1984.

He specialises in the regulatory areas of trading standards and food law, regularly appearing in Court and advising on such matters. Jon also has experience of work under the jurisdiction of bodies such as the Office of Fair Trading, the General Medical Council, The Adjudication Panel for England and the Traffic Commissioner. In addition to the above he has wide experience in complex criminal fraud cases and retains road traffic law as part of his practice.

Reported cases include:
Defra .v. Asda Stores (2004) 168 JP 1. Jon acted for Asda in the House of Lords resisting Defra’s appeal in relation to the issue of whether regulations relating to the grading of fruits and vegetables had been validly brought into force.

Kilhey Court Hotels Limited .v. Wigan M.B.C (2005) 169 JP 1. Jon successfully acted for a hotel group before the Administrative Court. It involved the issue of when a due diligence notice is required to be served under section 21(5) Food Safety Act 1990 and the extent of the Administrative Court’s powers to substitute its own finding for one of the court below without needing to remit.

Jon is recommended in the area of consumer law by Chambers and Partners Directory of the Legal Profession and the Legal 500

He gives talks to bodies such as the Trading Standards Institute, the Food Law Group and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and regularly contributes to consumer law training days and workshops.
Jon lives in North London. He enjoys all sports although his active participation is now confined to the odd slow jog and occasional defeat in tennis at the hands of one or more of his wife and three teenage children.
