Peter Sayer

Peter SayerPeter read law at Christ’s Collage, Cambridge (MA). He was called to the Bar of the Middle Temple, where he was a Major Harmsworth Exhibitioner and Scholar, in 1975.

He undertakes Consumer Credit Act work for financial institutions, including banks and finance houses, and for borrowers. He is particularly interested in credit and charge card problems. Peter also undertakes consumer contract and employment work as well as sale and supply of goods and services cases.

Peter was in House Counsel for American Express Europe.

Among reported cases in which he has appeared are the following;

Jarrett v. Barclays Bank [1999] QB1. This was a Court of Appeal case concerning the financing of timeshare properties abroad and the jurisdiction of the English Courts under the Brussels Convention.

Scarborough Building Society v. Humberside Trading Standards Department [1997] CCLR 47. This was a case concerning the assumptions that should be made about possible changes in interest rates and the impact that this would have on the APR that would have to be shown in credit advertisements.

Peter is author of “Credit Cards and the Law: An Introduction” (Fourmat Publishing). He was a contributor to “Sale and Supply of Goods and Services” (Sweet and Maxwell) 2007 and “The Law of Consumer Credit and Hire” (Oxford University Press) 2009.

He is a regular conference speaker on consumer, lending and mortgage matters.

He is also a part time First-Tier Tribunal Judge in the Social Entitlement Chamber.

Peter lives in London and Cornwall. He has a keen interest in music, antiques and literature. He is a governor of a school in the East End of London and has a teenage daughter.
