Peter Sayer
Peter Sayer read law at Christ’s College, Cambridge (MA). He was called to the Bar by the Middle Temple (Major Harmsworth Exhibition and Harmsworth Scholarship) in 1975. He specializes in Consumer Credit work, acting for banks, finance houses and other financial institutions as well as individuals and regulators. In particular, he likes to deal with credit and charge card problems as well as other complex financial matters. Peter has a keen interest in all areas of consumer and regulatory law. He also undertakes mortgage, banking and employment work. Peter was in-house counsel to American Express Europe Ltd. He now sits as a part- time chairman of Social Security Appeal Tribunals. Reported cases include: Jarrett v Barclays Bank plc [1999] Q.B. 1,- a Court of Appeal case concerning the financing of timeshare agreements in respect of properties in Spain and Portugal and the jurisdiction of the English courts under the Brussels Convention; Scarborough Building Society v Humberside Trading Standards Department [1997] C.C.L.R. 47,- a case concerning the assumptions that should be made about possible variations in the rate of interest chargeable under a mortgage agreement and the impact on the APR. Peter is recommended in the area of consumer law by Chambers and Partners’ Directory of the Legal Profession and the Legal 500. He is the author of Credit Cards and The Law: An Introduction (Fourmat Publishing) and various articles in legal publications. Peter is a regular conference speaker on consumer, lending and mortgage law matters. Peter is an avid collector of antiquarian books and antiques. He has a deep interest in music, English literature and history. He is a school governor. He has a teenage daughter and lives in London and the far west of Cornwall.
