Simon Popplewell

Simon read law at Lincoln College, Oxford University and was called to the bar (Gray’s Inn) in 2000. He was awarded the Lord Justice Holker Scholarship for his year at bar school.

Simon specialises in consumer law, particularly in the areas of consumer credit and trading standards. He has experience in appearing before the Office of Fair Trading and the Department of Trade and Industry in respect of consumer credit licensing and consumer credit licensing appeals. He regularly advises on all aspects of consumer credit business including drafting of documentation and advertising and acts for lenders and borrowers in contentious matters.

In the area of trading standards Simon’s clients include enforcement authorities and businesses in this wide ranging area. His work has included cases concerning the Trade Descriptions Act 1968, the Licensing Act 1964, the Trade Marks Act 1994, the Weights and Measures Act 1985, and the Consumer Protection Act 1987.

Simon also provides advice and representation in the area of the sale and supply of goods, has acted for estate agents in respect of decisions by the Office of Fair Trading made under the Estate Agents Act 1979, has represented major advertisers in respect of hearings before the ASA and ICSTIS and regularly advises and represents in the area of employment law.

Simon is a contributor to Atkin’s Court Forms for the area of Consumer Protection, and has recently annotated the Consumer Credit Act 2006 for Current Law. Simon has provided lectures for both business and the legal profession in relation to the law of consumer credit and lectures for independent CPD course providers in this area.
